What Drinks to Order in Niue

Treat the tastebuds to the tropical flavours, homegrown brews and more “potent” beverages of Niue. Whether you’re relaxing at a bar or browsing the drinks at a local grocery store, know what to order thanks to this list of the drinks in Niue you have to try!

1. Niu

It’s in the name (almost!) When in Niue, drink niu! Meaning “drinking coconut” in Niuean, niu is a young unripened coconut typically served in the original shell with a straw to suck through one of the coconut’s eyes.

Niu is on the menu of many cafes and restaurants across Niue, while it’s commonly given to guests on arrival at some accommodations.

2. Inu Hake Craft Beer

Sample an array of tropical, if not incredibly unique, flavours of craft beer from Niue’s locally-owned brewery, Inu Hake Brewery. Served on tap and in tasting trays at Avi’s Ark (Alofi), Inu Hake craft beer and cider consists of intriguing local flavours, such as Niue honey, vanilla, pineapple and coconut. What’s more, the method of pressure-brewing, rather than adding CO2 like a commercial beer, means that you’re less likely to experience a hangover. We’ve already put it to the test, but we’ll leave testing the theory up to you.

3. Vanilla Coffee

One of the agricultural crops Niue is known for is its organic vanilla. With that, try vanilla-infused coffee beans brewed into an aromatic cuppa at the Vanilla Cafe (Alofi Commercial Centre). Produced by Niue Vanilla International, vanilla-infused coffee beans are for sale in the Niue Vanilla Shop (Utuko, Alofi) when available, while vanilla farm tours are also available to book here to learn more about this challenging crop. 4. Noni Juice

Niue is also home to a noni plantation and farm that produces its very own noni juice, available to buy in local grocery stores like Double M (Alofi Commercial Centre). Noni grows from trees in the coffee family, but they are more famous for their smell than their taste. Admittedly, with its pungent aroma, noni juice is not a drink you’ll want “savour”, which is why noni is mostly produced as a superfood and has a wide range of health benefits, including antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antitumor, analgesic, hypotensive, anti-inflammatory, and immune-enhancing effects.

5. Cocktails

Finally, it wouldn’t be an island holiday without cocktails and mocktails! To fit the bill, Niue is home to well-trained mixologists and bar staff who can shake up some amazing cocktails in minutes. We highly recommend a drink at All Relativf (Swansons Complex) for the best and, admittedly, strongest cocktails on the island.
