A Note About Market Schedules
Things are always changing in Niue. Although we list market schedules that are correct at the time of writing, be sure to check market schedules at the Visitor Information Centre on arrival and see our guide, Opening Hours in Niue for more advice.
1. Niue Market – Tuesday and Friday
Time: Tuesday from 6 am to 8 am, and Friday from 6 am to 8 am and 4 pm to 7 pm.
Best time: Morning markets – 7 am, Friday afternoon market – 4 and 5 pm.
Location: Niue Market building, Alofi.
Niue’s original market comes to life several times throughout the week with the early morning Tuesday and Friday markets, as well as a Friday afternoon market. Come along for breakfast where the locals are selling hearty local porridge (nane), banana bread (pitako fusi), cooked taro and instant tea and coffee. Depending on the season, there are also various tropical fruit and vegetables for sale, as well as handicrafts in the form of jewellery and woven goods.
Friday afternoon offers a slightly different vibe, usually with few craft stalls but the addition of “Makfurly Burger” which is the most Niuean burger you’ll ever experience – or find out more in the 20 Best Restaurants in Niue.
2. Lady Farmers’ Market – Wednesday
Time: Wednesday from 8 am to 12 pm.
Best time: 8:30 am.
Location: Niue Market building, Alofi.
While there’s an emphasis on local produce being sold at the Lady Farmers’ Market, you’ll find handicrafts and sometimes cooked food for sale just like the Tuesday and Friday Niue Market (see above).
3. Women at Work – Saturday
Time: Saturday from 6:30 am to 12 pm.
Best time: 7 or 8 am.
Location: Niue Market building (or Sevene’s Tavern opposite Tomb Point), Alofi.
Browse an array of handicrafts and even see local women producing new goods for this living market at the Women at Work Market. Around 19 women get together to sell gorgeous woven hats, fans, bags and more, as well as Niuean food, to fundraise for providing meals for the islands’ elderly
4. Airport Market
Time: Plane days from 10:30 am to 2 pm.
Best time: 11 am to 1 pm (before the departure flight).
Location: Hanan Airport, Tapeu-Porritt Road, Alofi.
Under some marquee tents to the right-hand side of Hanan Airport’s public waiting area, the Airport Market is in full swing on plane days. There are sometimes some stalls beside the airport car park too. While you wait for your flight, browse jewellery, handprinted sarongs (paleu), coconut oils, head and neck garlands, and more. There are also usually hot and cold drinks, as well as hot food and snacks, such as hot fries and Niue’s famous Lupe Banana Chips. Some vendors may stick around for the arrival flight, but the best time to check out the market is before the departure flight.
5. Niue Organic Night Market
Time: First Thursday of the month, from 4 pm to 7 pm.
Best time: 4:30 pm.
Location: Niue Market building, Alofi.
Taking place just once a month, the Niue Organic Night Market is a must-do if your trip happens to coincide with it! Run by the Niue Organic Farmers Association, the market not only has lots of local organic produce for sale, but products made with organic produce, such as coconut oil. Treat the tastebuds to some cooked food and what would a Niue market be without handicrafts? So, yes, there are handicrafts for sale too!
