The Anaiki Motel in Makefu features a unique clifftop deck, ideal for watching humpback whales and spinner dolphins. The last time we stopped by, the boutique motel had four units in total, each with a separate bedroom and a sofa bed in the lounge to suit both couples and families. You’ll have your own self-catering facilities where you can take your meals onto the deck and enjoy watching the ocean and especially the sunset. 6. Scenic Matavai Apartments & Villa

Located about 1.5 km (1 mi) away from the Scenic Matavai Resort, the Scenic Matavai Apartments & Villa is a separate complex, yet offers guests all of the facilities of the nearby resort. These modern self-contained apartments, some on the oceanfront, include a kitchenette and an ensuite in a timber-lined studio apartment, which can also be interconnected to suit groups or families. There is also a three-bedroom villa available should you want a real home-away-from-home experience. Facilities at the complex include an outdoor swimming pool and a guest barbecue.

Located in the tiny village of Namukulu, Namukulu Cottages is a complex of five cottages surrounding a central outdoor swimming pool. The self-contained cottages (and sleepout for larger groups) are suitable for couples, groups and families who might want to make the most of the private access to a stunning lookout over the Pacific Ocean. 8. The Restoration Reef

Constructed on the clifftops in Alofi South, The Restoration Reef is a studio-style apartment with large windows opposite the double bed so you can wake up to watching whales if you’re lucky. There is also a private clifftop patio area where you can enjoy the views of the Pacific Ocean and whatever activity it may bring. 9. Tuhia Sunrise

Wake up to paradise at Tuhia Sunrise, a stunning three-bedroom haven perched on the east coast of Niue. You’ll love watching the sun peek over the horizon from your cliffside vantage point, which is also perfect for spotting whales during the season. While it might be a bit far from Alofi’s hotspots, you’re right on the doorstep of the magnificent Anapala Chasm. This modern oasis sleeps up to six with two queen beds and two singles, all wrapped up in tasteful Polynesian-inspired décor.
