What License Do You Need to Drive in Niue?
Renting a car is highly recommended for exploring Niue, as it is only one of the limited transport options available on the island. However, visitors to Niue will need to obtain a Niue Driver’s License to legally drive a motor vehicle. So can you drive in Niue on an overseas driving license? Only when you first arrive in Niue. You will need to use your overseas driving license in Niue in order to apply for the Niue Driver’s License.
The Niue Driver’s License
The Niue Driver’s License is legally required in order to drive a motor vehicle in Niue. The license is valid for one year.

What Driving License Do You Need to Drive in Niue?
In order to obtain a Niue Driver’s License, therefore be able to legally drive in Niue, you will need a full valid driving license, i.e. not a provisional or a learner’s license. Your overseas driving license can be from any country.
You will need to present your overseas driving license when applying for your Niue Driver’s License. You will also need your overseas license with you when you are driving in Niue before you have obtained a Niue Driver’s License, for example, if you pick up your vehicle straight from the airport or the Niue Police Station is closed when you arrive in Niue.
How to Get the Niue Driver’s License
The Niue Driver’s License can only be obtained once you are in Niue. To get a Niue Driver’s License, you must go to the Niue Police Station located on the main road of Alofi opposite the Utuko Reef sign. The Police Station is only open Monday to Thursday from 8am to 4pm.
What You Need for the Niue Driver’s License
To get the Niue Driver’s License from the Niue Police Station you will need:
- A full valid driving license
- NZ$22.50 to pay with MasterCard, Visa, New Zealand debit card or cash.
You’ll also need to know the name of your accommodation, which will act as your address on your driver’s license (you just need to know the name of the accommodation – not the full address, as the officers will be able to find this out).
With the information from your overseas driving license, as well as a photo taken of you at the station, Police Officers will be able to print out your new Niue Driver’s License which is valid for one year. Then, you can legally drive in Niue!
