What License Do You Need to Drive in Niue?
Renting a car is highly recommended for exploring Niue, as it is only one of the limited transport options available on the island. However, visitors to Niue will need to obtain a Niue Driver’s License to legally drive a motor vehicle. So can you drive in Niue on an overseas driving license? Only when you first arrive in Niue. You will need to use your overseas driving license in Niue in order to apply for the Niue Driver’s License.
The Niue Driver’s License
The Niue Driver’s License is legally required in order to drive a motor vehicle in Niue. The license is valid for one year.
What Kind of License Do You Need to Apply for a Niue Driver’s License?
To get a Niue Driver’s License, you must have a full valid driving license from overseas, i.e. not a provisional or a learner’s license. Your overseas driving license can be from any country.

Visitors to Niue with an Overseas License
If you are a visitor to Niue and you have a full valid driver’s license from overseas, you are eligible to apply for a Niue Driver’s License.
You will need to present your overseas driving license when applying for your Niue Driver’s License at the Niue Police Station. You will also need your overseas license with you when you are driving in Niue before you have obtained a Niue Driver’s License, for example, if you pick up your vehicle straight from the airport or the Niue Police Station is closed when you arrive in Niue.
Is it Legal to Drive in Niue Without a Niue Driver’s License?
Due to the Police Station’s limited opening hours, you can still hire and drive a vehicle without a Niue Driver’s License. You just have to get a Niue Driver’s License from the Police Station when it’s open. Until you have your Niue Driver’s License, make sure you have your overseas driving license with you when driving.
How to Get the Niue Driver’s License
The Niue Driver’s License can only be obtained once you are in Niue. To get a Niue Driver’s License, you must go to the Niue Police Station located on Tapeu-Porritt Road just west of the airport. The Police Station is only open Monday to Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm.
What You Need for the Niue Driver’s License
To get the Niue Driver’s License from the Niue Police Station you will need:
- A full valid driving license
- NZ$22.50 to pay with MasterCard, Visa, New Zealand debit card or cash.
You’ll also need to know the name of your accommodation, which will act as the address on your driver’s license (you just need to know the name of the accommodation – not the full address, as the officers will be able to find this out).
With the information from your overseas driving license, as well as a photo taken of you at the station, Police Officers will be able to print out your new Niue Driver’s License. Then, you can legally drive in Niue!
