What Airport Do You Fly into for Niue?

All island getaways start with booking a flight, but where should you book your flight to when visiting Niue? Luckily, you don’t have to research too hard about choosing an airport to fly to in Niue…

Niue is one small island. With that, it only has one airport, Hanan International Airport (IUE), whose capital the airport serves is Alofi. Learn about Niue’s airport, flights to the airport, its facilities, as well as the arrivals and departures process in this guide to where to fly to in Niue.

Hanan International Airport (IUE)

Niue’s only airport is Hanan International Airport (IUE). The airport is also referred to as “Niue International Airport” and sometimes even “Alofi International Airport”. The airport receives one or two flights per week and is only open on plane days.

Hanan International Airport is approximately a five-minute drive from Alofi and no more than 30 minutes drive from accommodations elsewhere on the island. See times and distances to travel from the airport in The Driving Times from Niue Airport.

The Niue Bond Store is Niue’s duty-free outlet, available to purchase goods at the Baggage Claim Area of the arrivals area and in the Departure Lounge after going through airport security for departure. They mostly sell alcohol, as well as occasional fragrances, spa products, snacks and the odd souvenir.

The market next to the outdoor waiting area is where you can browse a small selection of souvenirs, such as jewellery and garlands. Again, see the 5 Best Markets in Niue for more details.

The Arrival and Departure Process at Hanan Airport

Hanan Airport goes through an Immigration, Customs and Biosecurity process for arrival flights, as well as airport check-in and security process for departures. Due to the airport’s size and limited staff, the procedures here may be a little different to what you are used to.

Hanan Airport Arrival Process

When you arrive in Niue, you will be required to pass through Immigration with your complete Niue Passenger Arrival Card. You will then pick up your baggage from the baggage carriages at Baggage Claim before seeing a Customs and Quarantine Officer where you will be asked to declare any risk items. Learn about the arrivals process in detail at Everything You Need to Know About Arriving in Niue.

Hanan Airport Departure Process

When departing Niue, you need to check in at the airport with your checked baggage between 9 am and 12 pm. Airport security opens at 12:30 pm. You will be required to complete a Niue Departure Card before passing through security.

Because of the waiting time between check-in and airport security opening, it’s recommended to check in your baggage as soon as you can in the morning, before returning to the airport later for your afternoon flight. Learn more in Leaving Niue: The Niue Airport Departure Process.
