The South Pacific cyclone season starts in November and ends in April, making December a month with a higher risk of tropical storms.

Historically, December cyclones that affected Niue occurred in 1930, 1946, 1948 and 1965. In 2001, Category 4 Cyclone Waka caused a storm surge of up to 8 m (26 ft) and left numerous fallen trees and power lines.

Rest assured, Niue is very well prepared for this kind of weather event. A testament to that was Category 5 Cyclone Heta which hit Niue in 2004 and caused only minimal loss of life. If any weather warning is issued during your stay, your accommodation or tour staff will escort you to safe zones on higher ground and issue further instructions.
