  • Look out for deals in the low season (November-April)
  • Don’t feel obligated to hire a car as soon as you arrive. Many accommodations offer free airport transfers, while car rental companies offer rental deliveries for free, so you can rent a vehicle for fewer days

The Price of Budget Cars

Budget car prices: NZ$40-$55 per day

Niue’s budget cars tend to refer to small cars, usually models such as Mazda Demio, Toyota Passo, Toyota IST or something similar. These cars typically fit four to five people including the driver.

Engines are small, around 1.3l to 1.5l, so you may need to refuel a little more often than more premium cars (although note that driving distances are quite short in Niue).

Budget cars are sometimes some of the oldest cars in the rental company’s fleet.

The Price of Premium Cars

Premium car prices: NZ$60-$100 per day

Premium cars in Niue tend to refer to larger cars and newer model cars. Car models might include Mitsi Pajero, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Wingroad, Mazda MPV, Toyota Wish and something similar.

4WD cars are sometimes an option and tend to be at the higher end of the price spectrum. However, note that car rental companies will not allow you to go off-roading or use dirt tracks even in 4WD vehicles as per their rental agreement.

Premium vehicles typically sit five to six people and have more space for luggage. Engine sizes are around 1.8l where you’ll often find that you only need to fuel up once for a seven to 10-day rental.

Additional Costs for Hiring a Vehicle

Of course, there’s always going to be more associated costs with hiring a car than the simple daily rate itself. Some additional costs to consider include insurance, fuel and the Niue Driver’s License. Note that airport and accommodation drop-off pick-up is usually free, as is roadside assistance.

Optional insurance: Excess reduction NZ$10-$25 per day

Standard insurance is typically included in Niue’s car rentals which typically only covers collisions (check the car rental’s terms and conditions to see what type of damage the insurance includes). With the standard insurance, there is usually a liability excess of NZ$2,000-$3,000. Customers are offered the opportunity to reduce the excess to NZ$0-$500 by paying NZ$10-$25 per day.

Petrol: NZ$2.60+ per litre

Petrol in Niue is at least NZ$2.60 per litre (2020). Note that this price can increase.

Niue Driver’s License: NZ$22.50

Visitors wishing to drive in Niue must obtain a Niue Driver’s License from the Police Station, which costs NZ$22.50. Find out more in How to Get a Niue Driver’s License.

Additional Drivers: NZ$0-$10

While some car rental companies allow other drivers to be added for free, some will charge a small fee to add a driver, typically around NZ$10.
