Niue might be a small island with a small population, but it has no lack of events. There are 14 village show days happening throughout the year. Niue Village Show Days and Marine Days

Village Show Day Season – April-November

Anyone who knows anything about Niue knows that Village Show Days are unmissable. Each of the 14 villages on the island hosts its own show day to showcase the best of their food, handicrafts and community spirit.

January Events

The main event in January is the New Year when the island celebrates in its own way.

Public Holidays in January

Takai

Locals decorate any vehicle they can find to parade around the island, travelling from village to village to distribute candy and goodwill to passers-by! Interestingly, it’s the only day you can ride any vehicle in Niue without a WOF! Note that Takai doesn’t always fall on January 2, so look up this upcoming year’s Takai dates on Niue Tourism’s event page.

February Events

Typically a hot and humid month in Niue, there’s usually not much going on in February.

  • February 6 – Waitangi Day

Waitangi Day

A public holiday on 6 February in Niue and New Zealand, Waitangi Day is celebrated in Niue which is a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand. It celebrates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi that declared British sovereignty over New Zealand.

March Events

Call in for Niue’s ultimate foodie festival.

Savour Niue

Niue’s own foodie festival, Savour Niue usually has an exciting programme including welcome drinks and dinner, a “Tastes of Niue” tour of plantations, a master cooking class with wine matching and more. In years gone by, Savour Niue has been hosted by TV chef personality Mark Southon.

April Events

April is a special time for the Christian country of Niue. There are three public holidays dedicated to the Easter weekend.

Public Holidays in April

Easter

Niue Arts and Culture Festival

This week-long event occurs every other year, celebrating all things Niuean with a ton of festivities. Cultural performances, yam-blessing ceremonies, art exhibitions, handicraft sessions, uga catching… The list goes on! The Niue Arts and Culture Festival typically happens around Easter, but the latest dates are usually posted up on the Niue Tourism event page.

ANZAC Day

A public holiday on 25 April also celebrated in New Zealand and Australia, ANZAC stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. It is a remembrance day for those who have fought and died in world conflicts.

NiueKulele

The biannual NiueKulele is where you can learn various ukulele styles and techniques through ukulele workshops. June is a cooler month in Niue, making it an ideal time for some sporting events.

Ride the Rock

Niue’s annual cycling event, Ride the Rock is a series of bike races, such as an off-road multi-stage bike race from the top to the bottom of the island and the 60 km (37 mi) circumvention of the island on Niue’s main road. King’s Birthday

Also celebrated as a public holiday in New Zealand, the King of England’s birthday (June 1) is celebrated because Niue is part of the Realm of New Zealand whose head of state is “The Sovereign in Right of New Zealand”.

Constitution Week

The third week of October is Niue’s Constitution Week, which commemorates when Niue was granted self-government from New Zealand in 1974. The week involves three public holidays, as well as festivities such as a flag-raising ceremony, cultural presentations, performances, competitions and more. Yoga, Fitness & Adventure in Niue

Peniamina Gospel Day

On the fourth Friday of October, Peniamina Gospel Day is recognised to commemorate the adoption of Christianity in Niue. 26 October 1846 was when the founder of Christianity in Niue, Nukai Peniamina, returned to the island after learning to be a missionary in Samoa.
