Does Niue Have Taxis?

Kind of. Niue barely has a public transport system, but there is one taxi on the island, as well as a couple of car rentals offering the occasional taxi service. Needless to say, if you want to explore the island to its fullest, it’s best to hire a car as explained in Should You Rent a Car or Use a Taxi in Niue? However, if you can’t drive or just want to make a few short trips, The Taxi in Niue is a good Plan B. Here are five tips for using taxis in Niue.

1. Niue Only Has One Real Taxi

To say “Niue has taxis” would be an overstatement. There is only one taxi in Niue, which is called “The Taxi”. It is easily identifiable with a taxi sign on the top and side of the vehicle, as well as saying “TAXI” on the registration plate. There is only one of these taxi vehicles and one taxi driver available on the island.

2. Some Car Rental Companies Offer a Taxi Service, But…

Some of Niue’s car rentals, such as Niue Rentals and Alofi Rentals have advertised that they offer a taxi service, but this is usually only an option on demand when available… In other words, it’s best to use these car rental companies for car rentals rather than for a reliable taxi. See The Guide to Car Hire in Niue for more information.

3. The Taxi Can Only Be Booked Over the Phone

Forget about hailing down the taxi on the side of the road (we’re sure he would stop, it’s just the chances of seeing The Taxi when you need it is minimal). Don’t expect a string of taxis to be waiting on arrival a Niue’s airport. Don’t expect to book him on Uber or find an email address. The Taxi can only be booked over the phone. Due to international roaming being unavailable in Niue, it’s best to get your accommodation or the Visitor Information Centre to book The Taxi on your behalf. Otherwise, if you pick up a Niue SIM card, you can call him yourself on 5065 or 4074.

4. The Taxi Vehicle Can Seat Up to Seven

Just because it’s always good to know, The Taxi seats up to seven passengers. It is a Honda Stepwgn, which is an eight-seater car including the driver’s seat.

5. The Rate is by the Kilometre

Just like many taxis around the world, you pay for your journey by the kilometre. The rate is NZ$2 per kilometre. Check out The Driving Times in Niue You Need to Know for an idea of kilometres you’re likely to travel. By the way, The Taxi accepts both cash and EFTPOS, i.e. bank cards.
